Create Jewelry Using Textile Techniques

A new book from the UK, Sarah Keay's Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques, is an interesting and intriguing publication that any art jeweler will find valuable. Textile art jewelery enthusiasts will not be disappointed with Ms. Keay's addition to potential textile techniques for jewelry.
The introductary section of this book is a real treat including a history of the crossover between jewelry and textile techniques. As if that weren't uniquely wonderful enough, the book then follows with a section on the beginning of contemporary jewelry using textile techniques. This part of the book finishes nicely with brief blurbs on the foremost art textile jewelers today including Arlene Fisch, Flora Book and Mary Lee Hu. Anyone interested in textile techniques for art jewelry will undoubtedly be fascinated by reading this entire book introduction. It's hard to find this kind of historical perspective in most how-to jewelry making books.
A three page Materials section comes next which is adequate given the considerable diversity in projects and materials used in the book. A real bonus here is that the author presents several tips and warnings for readers before beginning any project.
The books' projects begin with Nuno felting where loose fibers are bonded to sheer fabrics as well as a project on standard felting. Illustrations are quite well done and text instructions are quite clear. Crocheting follows this interesting felting section and instructs on making a crocheted silk necklace as well as including an inspiring five page gallery.
The next section, Binding, is what we call wire wrapping in the States, and offers a wonderful and unique twist to the traditional technique. You'll be inspired by the gallery page here. Two appealing projects on making a tiara and a French knit hollow bangle follow in the Knitting and French Knitting section of this bool. Througout the sections of the book above you'll find gallery shots showing the possibilities for each of the various techniques. You'll see some very unique pieces of jewelry here like knitting encased in resin and turned into a bangle.
If you've ever wanted to manually weave jewelry on a loom, there's a rare and valuable section on just how to do that as well. The weaving process is laid out in complete detail and instruction and is far easier than one would expect. Art jewelers interested in textile techniques should find this section a rare find.
Lastly, this book concludes by presenting four more art jewelry textile techniques: hand spinning, smocking, bobbin lace making and sewing. Be certain to view Myung Urso's gallery here to appreciate and see her sewn jewelry of sterling, embroidery and oriental calligraphy.
You'll also get even more inspiration if you view the hand spinning project in this section. By recycling old newspaper, you can spin it into yarn for art jewelry making. Fascinating. Going green makes this project all the more appealing.
This unique book, Design and Make Jewellery Using Textile Techniques, concludes its wonderful presentation with a tantalizing gallery section. This is a great technique book and although it doesn't have the number of projects typically seen in US books, it is certainly worth its purchase price for the complete descriptive projects and techniques it presents. The finishing touch on this book is the list of websites to review.
