Many bride and groom's choose to incorporate elements and traditions which honor each other's heritage into their own wedding. Often the bride and groom come from different backgrounds, so the trick is how to take details from both sides and blend them into one beautiful wedding. These are just some great ideas to help you plan for your multi-cultural wedding.
When honoring your cultural heritage, the wedding ceremony should be the starting line. By knowing what wedding customs are tradition in one's own culture it is easy to learn how to bring the two differen cultures together in a wedding. Take Greek weddings for instance, it is traditional for the bride and groom to wear special marriage crowns called stefana. It would be lovely for a Greek-American bride to wear a traditional stefana crown to coordinate with her bridal jewelry, rather than the standard tiara. Blessings are traditional in Irish weddings; if the groom is Irish-American, why not include one of these traditional blessings in the wedding programs or invitations? Its very easy to honor both the bride and grooms hertiage equally without giving favor or preference to a specific one for the wedding.
Food always brings people together, and it is one of the easiest parts of the wedding for which to honor the bride and groom's heritage. There are a numerous amount of ways to do this. One way is to have an all American dinner with the different cultures represented by the deserts or you could just have a full fledged mutli-cultural dinner with mixes and matches of different kinds of foods. The popularity of the family style dinners for the reception is great for incorporating platters of Italian, Chinese, and Indian specialties. You could even set up different stations that include a variety of samples from the two different cultures. This concept works really well when the couple wants to feature cuisine from both families equally, and they are not flavors which necessarily make sense to serve together on one plate (ie, Indian curry and French coq au vin). A traditional French croquembouche is a perfect idea for a dessert instead of a tiered wedding cake.
Another part of the wedding to honor the bride and groom is with the wedding favors. It really doesn't matter if the wedding favors compliment the rest of the wedding as long as they are personal. A wedding could include in many different ways aspects and elements of the bride's Asian background, and at the same time give wedding favors that represent the grooms Italian heritage such as Italin "confetti". Or they could go the other direction, and serve Italian food for dinner, while giving a pot of lucky bamboo or an origami crane for the wedding favors. Or they may even decide to present two wedding favors to choose from, one representing each culture.
Another way to honor the bride and groom's cultures and heritage is through the wedding music. Music is a great way to bridge a cultural divide even if the music is from different cultural backgrounds. One idea is to have the main wedding band be sing American music while special music can be dedicated to representing the other cultures. For instance, in a Mexican -Irish wedding, a mariachi band could play during dinnertime, and a group of Irish step dancers could perform at the reception. Or honor the groom's Scottish background by having a bagpiper play as he and his bride exit the church, he in his kilt and she in her white gown and bridal jewelry. Virtually every culture has its own forms of music, making it a great cultural element to include in your wedding.
Personalized weddings are the most memorable and special, particularly when they include details from both the bride and the groom's side. Hopefully by following these multi-cultural wedding tips you can create a unique and meaningful wedding.
